Building the Future of Paignton Zoo

We’re investing in new habitats, species and visitor experiences across the zoo. You may notice some development work during your visit as we bring these plans to life.

What to expect when you visit

As we continue to develop the zoo, you may notice some temporary changes. We aim to keep disruption to a minimum and ensure you still have a great day out.

  • Some areas may be temporarily closed or partially visible

  • Occasional noise from construction work

  • Clearly signposted alternative routes where needed

  • Our teams are on hand to help throughout your visit

Phase One is complete!

For the last six months the zoo has been undergoing significant development, here's what has changed so far:

New Central Plaza and pathways

We’ve created a new Central Plaza to make it easier to get your bearings and to have a central meeting point. Here you can find large maps and signage to get you on your journey.

New Zones and Routing

The zoo is now sectioned into 4 zones - Wetlands, Islands, Grasslands and Rainforests.

There are new paths, new wayfinding signs and a new map to help guide you through the new layout, as well as informative signs about each habitat.

New habitats

We have made significant changes to some areas of the zoo including the Rhino House & Paddock, and the new sitatunga habitat behind the restaurant.

Entrance Building

Our entrance building has had a makeover! Now with a clean, modern interior with fresh signage and a new central till, as well as a lick of paint to the exterior.

New play and activity areas

New play features and activity trails have been introduced across the zoo and are proving very popular with our littlest visitors.

The Savannah

The largest area undergoing major development is the Savannah, soon to be a mixed species habitat for giraffes, zebras, blesbok and ostriches. With the giraffes soon moving over to the other side of the house, and extensive work being done to open up the entire area.

What's Coming Next

A new Grasslands experience

We’re creating expansive habitats inspired by some of the world’s most iconic grassland environments. These spaces will bring together species in more natural, mixed environments.

New species and habitats

As part of this development, you’ll start to see new species arriving, with habitats designed to better reflect how animals live in the wild.

Looking ahead

This is just the beginning. These developments form part of a wider transformation, with future plans including larger, immersive habitats and exciting new arrivals still to come.
