About the black crowned crane

The black crowned crane inhabits savanna, wetlands, and agricultural mosaics across West and East Africa, including countries such as Senegal, Nigeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya. It is recognised by its golden crown of stiff feathers, dark grey body, and red facial skin.

This species feeds on seeds, insects, and small vertebrates, and forms strong pair bonds during the breeding season.

Conservation

The species is classified as Endangered, with wetland loss, capture, and hunting across West and East Africa contributing to population declines.
