Paignton Zoo is currently home to small 'army' of dyeing poison frogs, which you can find in Tropical Trails.
Class:
Amphibia
Order:
Anura
Family:
Dendrobatidae
The dyeing poison frog is famous for its striking and highly variable colour patterns, ranging from bright blues and yellows to deep greens with bold black markings. Adults grow to around 4–5 centimetres and are active during the day.
These frogs inhabit tropical forest leaf litter, feeding mainly on ants and other small invertebrates. In the wild, their bright colours signal toxicity to potential predators.
The species is classified as Least Concern, but ongoing deforestation in the Guianas region and northern Brazil threatens parts of its habitat.
