Brown Kiwi

We are home to the only kiwi bird in the UK! Please be aware that Manu, is nocturnal so you are not likely to see him during your day visit to the zoo. However, we do have a live webcam feed that shows him tucked up in his nest in his home at ABC aviaries.

About the brown kiwi

The brown kiwi is a flightless bird native to New Zealand. With shaggy, hair-like feathers, a long pale bill, and reduced wings hidden beneath its plumage, it is superbly adapted to life on the forest floor. Measuring around 40–45 centimetres, it uses its highly developed sense of smell to locate worms, insects, and other invertebrates.

Kiwis are largely nocturnal and usually live alone or in pairs within defined territories.

Conservation

The species is classified as Near Threatened, with introduced predators such as stoats, dogs, and cats, alongside habitat loss and fragmentation in New Zealand, posing significant challenges.
