About the red-crowned crane

The red-crowned crane inhabits wetlands, river floodplains, and marshes in northeastern Asia, including China, Russia, Korea, and Japan. It is one of the largest crane species, recognised by its white body, black neck, and distinctive red crown patch.

This elegant bird feeds on plants, invertebrates, and small vertebrates in wetland habitats and forms lifelong pair bonds.

Conservation

The species is classified as Endangered, with wetland degradation, infrastructure collision, and disturbance across northeastern Asia posing ongoing threats.
