About the reticulated glassfrog

The reticulated glassfrog is one of the most extraordinary amphibians in the world. Measuring just 2–3 centimetres, it has translucent green skin that allows parts of its internal organs to be visible from below. This remarkable adaptation helps it blend seamlessly into leaves above rainforest streams.

These delicate frogs are nocturnal insectivores, feeding on small invertebrates. Males guard eggs laid on leaves that overhang water, protecting them until the tadpoles drop into the stream below.

Conservation

The species is currently listed as Least Concern, though deforestation in Mexico and Central America continues to reduce suitable forest habitat.
