Paignton Zoo is home to a large and colourful flock of 21 scarlet ibis. You can visit them up in our ABC aviaries, where they share a home with our elegant Oriental white stork.
Class:
Aves
Order:
Pelecaniformes
Family:
Threskiornithidae
The scarlet ibis is one of the most visually striking wetland birds, native to coastal lagoons, mangroves, and wetlands in the Caribbean and northern South America, including Venezuela, Colombia, and Trinidad.
Its vivid red plumage comes from pigments found in crustaceans and other invertebrates that make up its diet.
The species is classified as Least Concern, though wetland loss and hunting in parts of the Caribbean and northern South America can affect local populations.
