Paignton Zoo is home to two toco toucans. You can find these iconic birds in our ABC Aviaries.
Class:
Aves
Order:
Piciformes
Family:
Ramphastidae
The toco toucan is native to tropical lowland forests and woodland edges of South America, particularly within Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. It is instantly recognisable by its enormous bright orange bill, which helps regulate body temperature and reach fruit on branches.
An omnivore, it feeds on fruit, seeds, and occasionally insects and small animals.
The species is classified as Least Concern, though deforestation and trapping in parts of South America affect some populations.
