About the wrinkled hornbill
The wrinkled hornbill is a striking tropical bird native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Borneo, Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. Named after the distinctive wrinkled casque on top of its large bill, this endangered species spends much of its time high in the forest canopy, feeding mainly on fruits, as well as insects, snails and small vertebrates.
Wrinkled hornbills play an important role in rainforest ecosystems by dispersing seeds across the forest as they travel in search of food. One of their most fascinating behaviours occurs during breeding, when the female seals herself inside a hollow tree, leaving only a narrow opening through which the male delivers food to her and their chicks.
Conservation
This species is classified as Vulnerable, with logging, hunting, and forest fragmentation in Borneo and Sumatra significantly reducing suitable habitat.
